Don’t bet against Denver

We are at the halfway mark of the NFL season and we already know who are going to win the Super Bowl. From the way it is going it looks nigh on impossible that the Denver Broncos will not be winning their third championship; they are currently red hot favourites with Betfair to make it happen.

There is no such thing as a dead certain in sport, but, in this case there is. The current Super Bowl favourites were the most dominant side in the NFL last season before coming unstuck in the Super Bowl to the Seattle Seahawks 43-8. The reason for this was the quality of the Seahawks defence, they neutralised Peyton Manning and the so often rampant Broncos offense. However, this season the Seahawks have been dicey. They are currently 5-3, a record not good enough to win their division and currently not good enough to merit a playoff spot – if that happens you may as well post the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Denver now.

Take Seattle out of the equation and there is no side who can cope with Denver. People run out of superlatives for describing Manning. The quarterback, nicknamed “The Sheriff”, is a ring marshal on the gridiron. His arm has destroyed countless opposition defences in the past 15 years.

Manning will be the first to tell you that he owes a lot to wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who is the best in America. These two combined are something else. In the seven games they have played together this season, Manning has thrown Thomas seven touchdown passes as well as for 767 yards. Simply, these two are too good for any defence but the Seahawks. Chuck in Wes Welker, Montee Ball and Emmanuel Sanders and you have the best offence seen in the NFL for quite some time.

In John Fox, Denver have a coach capable of leading them to the Super Bowl, he just needs to win it. He addressed the problems of last year’s defeat by strengthening his defence, most notably with DeMarcus Ware. The sacking machine arrived from Dallas in the summer and has added some real mettle to the Broncos defence.

When you have the best QB and offence in the league, combined with one of the best coaches and defences then you have to expect Denver to win the Super Bowl. If they don’t, which is nearly utopian to think of, then it will have to go down as one of the biggest upsets in the history of the sport.
